A trusted blog, sliding in search.
They came to me with a blog that had been sliding for most of a year, down nearly 40 percent at its worst. The whole site's search traffic was under pressure too, with a break as one of Google's big core updates was rolling out. I'm careful about that timing: it lines up, and that's as far as I'll go without proof.
We built the strategy with their team.
None of this worked because I ran it alone. Their team is in the pipeline for real, with clear roles in what gets written and what gets approved.
- Their writer executes the rewrites from my briefs.
- Their content lead flags which products need attention and checks copy accuracy against what their team knows about their formulas.
- Their compliance owner makes the final call on claims.
Diagnose: separate the signal from the noise.
With any traffic drop, the first thing I do is pull the analytics apart month by month against the year before, and split the blog's curve from the rest of the site. That split mattered here, because the blog fell harder, and it recovered differently too.
Decide: fix what's already there first.
The decision was straightforward but not obvious: fix what's already there before adding more. From there, the question was which posts to rewrite, and where a new post would fill a genuine gap. I aim for terms a brand this size can actually win, not the broad ones a much bigger site already owns. That usually means the specific, honest question a real buyer is typing.
A blogging system that holds the bar.
The blogging system takes content from sourced research to human sign-off, with a record of the brief, draft, reviewed copy, and scores. I used the rewrite program to fix existing content while making room for new posts.
Build: give every post the same checks.
The current system runs eight steps, with four gates that can send work backward. A draft that fails a gate goes backward, not forward.
- Sourced research and briefing.
- A competitive search angle, with brand-coordinator sign-off.
- A five-section outline built for readability and AI retrieval.
- Drafting in the brand's own voice.
- A structural and readability audit against a 70-point rubric.
- SurferSEO keyword optimization and verified source citations.
- Internal links and a compliance pass requiring an 80+ grade.
- Final human sign-off before publishing.
Run: keep their people in the review loop.
Nothing with a health claim goes live without their compliance owner's sign-off. We settled on a precedent-based rule: if their own site already uses a claim, it's fair game. I push back on new exposure, with the tradeoff and search volume shown plainly. Together, we rewrote 105 existing posts and added 69 new ones, weighted heavily toward fixing what was already live.
Grow: organize around the reader.
The program now groups posts by the reader's health condition, with personas shaping the voice and next step each post offers. By 2025 the blog was back to its pre-drop level, and it held there into 2026.
Back to full strength, and now half of all search traffic.
49%
of all organic search traffic now comes through the blog, up from 36% in 2023
42%
drop in search traffic to the rest of the site since 2023, while the blog held its ground
90%
of what AI engines surface for the brand is blog content
Now the same discipline, condition-first structure, real personas, and sourced claims, is aimed at a different target: AI visibility. If your own blog took a hit, ask whether to write more or fix what's there before touching anything else.
